DESIGN BRIEF

This project was the final major project for the Certificate IV in Interior Decoration.

The design brief called for a proposed redesigned space of a client's residence in a 1900s, double-brick, federation style semi-detached house in Manly, New South Wales, Australia. The project involved engaging in client consultations and presentations, developing new floor plans, selecting furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E), creating perspective drawings, and sourcing materials and pricing to curate a physical sample board.

The Current Home

The house is located in Manly, New South Wales. This suburb in Northern Sydney has a long-standing reputation as a tourist attraction, owing its attractive setting on the Pacific Ocean, many beaches and easy accessibility by ferry. Manly Beach is one of Sydney's famed surf spots.

The client lives with their two children and pet dog, and has intention to rent the property out as an Airbnb home. They value work-life harmony, and desires a space for both rest and entertainment. They are an active individual, and loves nature and the outdoors. They hope to honour the old features of the home, while embracing a new, more modern look in its interior. Energy efficiency and sustainability are also important considerations.

Grounding Concept

“Light is a powerful substance. We have a primal connection to it.

In a way, light unites the spiritual world and the ephemeral, physical world."

- James Turrell

The Proposal

Three areas in the house were redesigned. One bedroom was moved to a different area of the house, opening the back of the house to a new open concept kitchen-dining area. An extension of a laundry-powder room was also included in the proposal.

Organic minimalism shapes the decor of the home, focusing on simplicity and authenticity. Colours reflect the quiet and elegant tones of the Australian landscape, complementing wood, stone, and natural fibres.

Bedroom 3

This space was transformed into a dual-purpose study and sleep area, designed to double as an Airbnb room. Custom joinery maximises ergonomics and storage, while light and golden tones captures natural light from the northern-facing windows. Natural materials and a calming colour palette bring a serene, nature-inspired vibe.

Laundry-Powder Room

Located near the back of the house, the powder room provides a quiet space in an otherwise busy area - the kitchen. A dedicated space for indoor laundry drying and temporary storage was included, tucking it away from communal areas, thus offering the opportunity for an open kitchen plan. The view towards Manly Beach is maintained in this space.

Kitchen-Dining Space

The kitchen and dining area serve as the heart of the home, connecting the backyard and living space for greater flow. As the most welcoming and public part of the house, it uses natural light prominently to create an inviting atmosphere. This space transitions the interior to exterior through the use of light, enhancing its openness and accessibility.
